It uploads files, renames, creates a thumbnail of the image (saving bandwidth when viewing album), logs the upload (IP address, username etc). It also records how much the user has uploaded. This is for security. It has a system in place where it detects if a user is uploading lots of data to try and slow you server down! If this happens it simply will not allow uploads for another 24 hours from this user.
